Last week I spent a day with Manchester-based photographer Matthew Grainger, at his studio 'Little Wings Photography' in order to produce a promotional film for the business. Matt is a very accomplished wedding photographer, but he's also a specialist in newborn photography and portraits, and he's truly fabulous.
All images taken by Matthew Grainger
I joined Matt just as his first cake smash model arrived. Emily was first up, and she took a little bit of persuading that the camera was her friend! Matt has a brilliant manner with the children, with heaps of toys and props to keep their attention and make them smile for the camera.
This was the first time I'd filmed a photographer in action in a studio, and the first time I'd been witness to a cake smash. I'm not sure I was quite prepared for the mess... let alone all the stickiness! Just when I thought it couldn't get any more messy, Matt got the jar of jam out. We soon discovered that little Emily was a big fan of Jam...
It didn't take Logan long to smash into his cake, with a little help from Matt, and his mum. Being sticky didn't seem to bother him at all! He made it look so effortless that I almost wished I could plonk my own head in the middle of a cake, and perhaps I will some day, I'll keep you posted!
What really did amaze me is how stunning the images have turned out. Don't get me wrong, Matt's standard is incredibly high, but it just seemed strange that such a messy shoot could look so beautiful, relaxed and fun. I wonder what age it is that you become bothered by having jam spread on your cheeks?!
Each full cake smash finished with some splash time in a beautiful tin bath, complete with bubbles. Ok so yes it's fun to photograph, and the images look super cool, but it also saves the parents and guardians a lot of grief cleaning their cars out...
Matt's final shoot of the day was Lyla, and there was no cake smash this time. I got to see some of Matt's gorgeous homemade props, all lovingly crafted and tailored to his style of photography, and what suits the children he photographs. He also has a massive selection of clothes, hats, and costume jewellery - something to literally suit every occasion, and to match the many backdrops he has in the studio!
It was a real pleasure to spend my day at Little Wings Photography. As a videographer I never get to be inside a photography studio, so I'm delighted I got the opportunity. Matt is a top bloke, and I'd recommend him highly.
Here's the result - the Little Wings Promotional Film...
